Step-by-Step guide: YouTube Shorts Ads

1. It All Starts with Google Ads

  • Your Google Ads Account: You'll need an active Google Ads account. This is your central hub for managing and running ads across Google's network, including YouTube. If you don't have one yet, head over to ads.google.com to set it up.

2. Creating Your Campaign

  • New Campaign: Once you're in Google Ads, click the "Create Campaign" button to start a new campaign.
  • Campaign Goal: Select a campaign goal that aligns with your advertising objectives. For YouTube Shorts, common goals include:
    • Brand awareness and reach
    • Product and brand consideration
    • Website traffic
    • Leads
    • App installs (if applicable)
  • Campaign Type: Choose the "Video" campaign type to access the options for running ads on YouTube, including Shorts.

3. Targeting Your Audience

  • Demographics: Define your ideal audience by age, gender, location, and other demographic factors.
  • Interests: Target users based on their interests, such as "beauty enthusiasts," "gaming fans," or "technology early adopters."
  • Behaviors: Reach people based on their past online behavior, such as previous YouTube watch history or website visits.
  • Custom Audiences: Create custom audiences based on your existing customer data or website visitors.

4. Crafting Your Shorts Ad

  • Video Creation: Create a short, vertical video (9:16 aspect ratio) specifically designed for the Shorts format. Keep it concise, attention-grabbing, and optimized for mobile viewing.  You can also use your existing YouTube Shorts. Just make sure your YouTube account is linked to Google Ads account.
  • Ad Formats: You can choose from different ad formats, including:
    • Skippable in-stream ads: These appear between organic Shorts and can be skipped after a few seconds.
    • Non-skippable in-stream ads: These are shorter ads (up to 15 seconds) that viewers cannot skip.
  • Call to Action: Include a clear and compelling call to action (CTA) to encourage viewers to take the desired action, such as visiting your website or downloading your app.

5. Setting Your Budget and Bidding

  • Budget Allocation: Determine your daily or campaign-wide budget for your Shorts ads.
  • Bidding Strategy: Choose a bidding strategy that aligns with your campaign goals. Common options include:
    • Maximize clicks: Get the most clicks possible within your budget.
    • Target CPA: Set a target cost-per-acquisition (CPA) to optimize for conversions.
    • Maximize conversions: Get the most conversions possible within your budget.

6. Monitoring and Optimization

  • Track Performance: Monitor your campaign performance closely using Google Ads' reporting tools. Track key metrics like views, click-through rates, and conversions.
  • Make Adjustments: Based on your campaign performance, optimize your targeting, bidding, and ad creatives to improve results over time.
